Clash by Knight

When I heard last week that Mark Ryan, fight choreographer for First Knight, the 2004 film King Arthur, and the long running British TV series, Robin of Sherwood, to name a few, was in town long enough to teach one class, I jumped at the opportunity. So, despite having just finished a 2 hour Chinese saber class, I raced across town in the pounding rain to spend 3 hours learning a medieval broadsword fight. Fortunately, the only lasting side affect was a little wear and tear to my right palm, as my side of the fight made considerable (and rather nasty) use of a dagger, necessitating a one-hand grip on the broadsword.

All in all it was a great class, and Mark was a fun, down-to-earth Brit who really knew his stuff. He said the greatest professional compliment he received was from Jerry Bruckheimer who, after witnessing some of Mark's choreography for King Arthur, said, "well, that's a bit much." Hey, who said medieval warfare was pretty?
