No Shit, Sherlock

So here I was looking forward to the new Sherlock Holmes picture with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, especially as I have friends who worked on that film. Then I read the plot (always a bad idea) whose villain is purportedly based on a real historical figure. As fans know, the Holmes stories appeared, and were set in London, from 1887 to 1907 (the film appears set in the 1890s). Interestingly, the “real historical figure” would have been in his late teens through early 20s at this time but director Guy Ritchie can never be accused of shooting for accuracy. Nevertheless, having inspired a number of writers (most notably Somerset Maugham and Ian Fleming), Crowley would probably find being the continuing source of inspiration for villainy and skullduggery amusing, especially with so many far superior examples, both past and contemporary. Dick Cheney, f’rinstance.
